are members of the neurotransmitter ligand-gated ion channels that mediate
neuronal inhibition on binding GABA. The effects of GABA on GABAA receptors
are modulated by a range of therapeutically important drugs, including
barbiturates, anaesthetics and benzodiazepines. Function: GABA, the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the
vertebrate brain, mediates neuronal inhibition by binding to the
GABA/benzodiazepine receptor and opening an integral chloride channel. |
